Why your Mac can't open .pst files

A .pst file is an Outlook data file. It holds a whole mailbox, with folders, messages, attachments, calendar items and contacts, in Outlook's own format. It usually comes from Outlook on Windows.

Apple Mail can't read it, and neither can Preview or any other app that comes with macOS. When you double-click it in Finder, macOS asks which app to use. The viewer on this page reads it in your browser instead.

Open a .pst file on a Mac, step by step

  1. Copy the .pst file to your Mac, for example from a USB drive or a shared folder, into Downloads or onto the desktop.
  2. Drag it from Finder onto the box at the top of this page, or click Choose files. An .ost file works too.
  3. Pick a folder in the Folder drop-down. Folders are indented like the tree in Outlook and show how many messages they hold.
  4. Read messages. They're listed newest first; click one to open it in the reading pane. Use the search box to filter by subject, sender and recipients, or tick Search message text too to search inside the messages.
  5. Keep what you need. Download attachments, or select messages and choose Save selected as PDF, Export selected as .eml (ZIP) or Export as MBOX.

Big files are fine. The viewer reads only the parts it needs for the folder or message you're looking at, so a multi-gigabyte .pst opens quickly in Safari without being uploaded and without filling your Mac's memory.

Move the mail into Apple Mail

Apple Mail can't import a .pst, but it can import MBOX files. Export each folder you want and import it:

  1. In the viewer, pick a folder, such as Inbox.
  2. Click Export as MBOX with nothing selected to export the whole folder, or select messages first to export only those. Safari saves the .mbox file to Downloads.
  3. In Apple Mail, choose File > Import Mailboxes, select Files in mbox format, and pick the file.
  4. The messages appear in a new mailbox under On My Mac. Repeat for each folder you want to keep.

More about this on the PST to MBOX page.

Save emails as PDF for Preview

Select messages and click Save selected as PDF. In Safari's Print dialog, click the PDF button at the bottom-left and choose Save as PDF. Each email starts on a new page, oldest first, up to 500 per PDF. The PDF opens in Preview. Picture attachments are printed after each message; other attachments are listed by name, so download them separately.

Your email stays on your computer

The viewer runs entirely in your browser on your Mac. Your .pst file is never uploaded to our server and never stored. Only this page and its scripts come from us; reading the file, the PDF and the exports all happen on your computer.
